I agree that as teachers we need to be preparing students for life both inside and outside the classroom. The idea of computers (or cheaper labor) taking analytical jobs is not abstract. We can see examples of this in our everyday lives, from e-filing our taxes to reaching automated systems when we attempt to reach customer service representatives. It is quite frightening to think our schools may not be preparing children with the skills necessary to succeed in an increasingly right-brained workforce. If we do not teach our students these essential skills in the classroom, where do expect them to be learned?

Janet poses an excellent question about how to assess these 'softer skills.' Indeed, the SAT only addresses left brain skills. Once teachers are educated about EQ and other left brain skills, the first step might be educating the students about them, in the same way the the MIs are often discussed and talked about. As Henne suggests, it is our duty in many ways to teach these skills. If we could come up with assessments that are valued by districts and parents, we would be all set. Students should learn these skills at home or elsewhere but usually it falls to schools. Where can we make room in the curriculum to teach these skills?

The distinction between divergent and convergent understandings is powerful. Are divergent understandings tied to developmental levels? How do you determine what divergent understandings are appropriate?

I truly agree that some understandings appear like facts. They become facts for those who had drawn them as conclusions or inferences in the past. For the present sudents, they should be able to deduce these inferences/conclusions from well-planned learning activities designed by teachers.

While it is true that everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion,I believe teachers must also help students generate or formulate responsible opinions - opinions that are based from processing of information or "meaning making" designed by teachers to happen in the teaching-learning process. The processing of information may include seeing things from the points of view of other people,empathizing with other people,weighing pros and cons,making a discernment or value judgment. Doing this will help students in making responsible decisions in their day to day life.
