Diane Van Ausdall has been an educator for over forty years. During this time, she was selected as a Teacher of the Year, Milken National Educator, and National Technology Teacher of the Year. As a result, her classroom was featured in U.S. News and World Report as one of six classrooms in the nation where "technology really works." Students in Diane's classes excelled and received recognition for their outstanding accomplishments because Diane employed motivational strategies to encourage students to work up to their ability and go beyond their expectations. Many years ago, she recognized the power of "backward design." Diane has taught students of all ability levels from special education to gifted to advanced placement, as well as college students. In the last fifteen years, Diane has concentrated on presenting workshops to teachers and administrators on how to integrate technology into the curriculum, develop performance-based assessments, establish peer review groups, and implement curricula based on the Standards. At the time of her retirement from teaching, she was the District Curriculum Coordinator for Understanding by Design. In the last five years, Diane has conducted numerous workshops promoting Understanding by Design in schools throughout the country with a special emphasis on how UbD can be implemented in a school district. She is also an Expert Reviewer for ASCD's UbD Exchange. Diane's workshops are appropriate for all grade levels and all subject areas. She is equally at home with various audiences from beginning and experienced teachers, to district administrators, as well as college professors and boards of education. Areas of expertise:

Client Feedback about Diane"Our school community is highly regarded and considered one of the top school systems on the planet. As a result, we attract outstanding staff from around the world. Going into the recent UbD training I was a bit concerned that the training might not meet the expectations of our staff. However, Diane's presentation and interaction with staff was outstanding. Utilizing dialogue and numerous engaging activities, Diane quickly won the approval of the teachers. Diane displayed a level of confidence and poise that over the course of the training revealed a strong knowledge of teaching and learning, resulting in staff feedback that was overwhelming positive. In fact, we plan to attempt to schedule her for a follow-up training in the spring focusing on peer review and the train the trainer model. Thanks for providing a knowledgeable and talented presenter who was able to "teach" our staff to become better at what they do. I believe that our staff who attended will become stronger educators and even more talented in their approach to teaching students to think and learn."
Art Fessler "Southwest Cooperative greatly appreciates that time, knowledge, and skills that Diane (Van Ausdall) shared with our group. We are pleased to begin this (UbD) journey with Diane as our facilitator. Everything worked out great! We look forward to her return."
Christie Flores "We were very pleased with the work of Everett (Kline) and Diane (Van Ausdall)....Diane came with lots of examples and models to share with the 'novice' group. She provided ample materials so that the participants had a clear understanding of her presentation. There was a lot of 'aha's'... Everett's work with the 'expert' group initiated heavy discussions .... prompting us to redirect our plans for next year."
