Tanya Johnson is an educator committed to developing effective learning experiences that promote equity and critical thinking among students residing in traditionally marginalized communities. She has a B.A. in Political Science with a minor in Policy Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles and a M.A. in Organization and Leadership with a specialization in School Building Leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University.
Tanya is a consultant for Authentic Education currently assigned to the Toledo Learn Project in Toledo, Ohio. She began her career in education in Compton, CA as a teacher of Math and Science eleven years ago. In 2004, she moved to the east coast and successfully worked for five years to narrow the achievement gap in mathematics at a high performing charter school in Newark, NJ. In 2009, Tanya transitioned into a full time teacher leadership role as Staff Developer for Mathematics (grades 5 -12) at a charter school in the Washington Heights community where she was successful at galvanizing a team of middle school and high school educators to collectively improve their test scores by nearly 20% on the state exam in one year. She recently served as the Director of Math for a charter school network in Brooklyn, NY where she was responsible for ensuring the effective planning and implementation of math instruction in grades K-8 that facilitates critical thinking..
